Control Hire was engaged to support a live construction extension at a Childcare Centre in Queensland. Operating in a sensitive environment with young children nearby, the primary challenge was mitigating construction noise, airborne dust and structural vibrations while ensuring the safety of children and staff.
Challenge
The childcare facility was fully operational during the extension works, necessitating strict control over environmental impacts. Key challenges included:
- Proximity to sensitive receivers (children and educators).
- Elevated risk of noise intrusion disrupting daily operations.
- Safety concern regarding wall climb-ability, given its location adjacent to a play area.
- Dust & Vibration from construction works
Solution & Equipment
Control Hire provided an integrated solution combining both environmental protection and child safety measures:
- Certified Noise & Vibration Management Plan and a Dust & Air Quality Management Plan prepared by Control Hire’s environmental team.
- 25m Temporary Noise Wall deployed to shield the childcare facility from construction noise. The wall achieves high acoustic performance (85% noise absorption).
- Height Strategy: The wall was customised to be 2 metres high under awnings and 3 metres high along the remainder, optimising acoustic coverage while maintaining compliance with the site’s physical constraints.
- Climbing Hazard Mitigation: To prevent children from attempting to climb the barrier from the wet play zone, a protective shade cloth was applied to the wall face—an effective and compliant deterrent.
- Environmental Monitoring: Three individual monitors, a Sound Monitor, a Dust Monitor and a Vibration Monitor, were installed on site to ensure real-time compliance. Baseline readings were taken prior to works, and a management plan was developed in line with regulatory guidelines.
Outcome
The installation allowed construction to proceed with no disruption to childcare operations. The Noise Control Wall effectively reduced on-site noise exposure, while monitoring data confirmed dust. noise & vibration compliance with environmental regulations throughout the project duration. Safety concerns were also fully addressed through the climb-resistant wall treatment, giving the client peace of mind.
