Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) East is a key infrastructure project in Victoria, designed to connect Melbourne’s growing health, education, retail and employment precincts.
Tunnel boring machines will launch from the tunnel access structure under construction at the SRL East construction site in Burwood.
Control Hire worked together with Cycon Civil and Laing O’Rourke to design, deliver and install a certified ventilation, monitoring and noise attenuation solution for the construction of the tunnel access shaft.
The Solution:
Designed and manufactured in Australia, 4 x 1250mm Dual-Silenced Axial Fans with Variable Frequency Drives (VSDs) were custom mounted and strategically placed by Control Hire’s Installation Specialists on either side of the tunnel access shaft to create a push-pull arrangement – one side propelled fresh air across the working face of the shaft while the other side extracted air venting it externally, creating a constant high-quality airflow throughout and ensuring appropriate air integrity across the working area.
Control Hire also installed a 4-metre-tall Noise Control Wall to provide noise attenuation around the axial fan units, ensuring the project met regulatory compliance for noise levels and minimised environmental impact to surrounding areas. Live on-site readings recorded decibel reduction peaks of 29.2dB(A)!
A second stage of works involving walers, a roof enclosure and shade sheet system also had to be future-proofed with key ducting access points to maintain air quality once the roof was placed over the shaft.
Dust and Gas Area Monitors were carefully installed by Control Hire within the tunnel access structure – both monitors are built tough for construction environments and have seamless cloud integration, enabling live real-time reporting access and instant dangerous levels alarm notification by Email, SMS and Dashboard.
